Russia had threatened to quit the Black Sea agreement if a list of demands to overcome obstacles to its own grain and fertiliser exports was not met by 18 May. Three new ships were authorised today to take part in a deal allowing the safe Black Sea export of Ukraine grain, the UN has said. Thousands of targets hit with sanctions by Washington so far have included Vladimir Putin, the financial sector and oligarchs. The US and its allies, including the European Union and Britain, have continued to ratchet up sanctions and export-control pressure on Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. "Our commitment to continue tightening the screws on Russia remains as strong as it was last year," the official said. They were also aimed at closing loopholes used to evade sanctions, further reducing international reliance on Russian energy, and narrowing Moscow's access to the international financial system. Speaking to reporters today ahead of the gathering, a US official said the G7's latest efforts were aimed at disrupting Russia's ability to get materials it needs for the battlefield. G7 leaders are gathering in Hiroshima tomorrow with the invasion of Ukraine high on the agenda. The US and the rest of the Group of Seven's (G7) major economies will unveil new sanctions and export controls targeting Russia, a US official has said. "I ask you now to remember everyone who is fighting for Ukraine." "Many of our people were not wearing vyshyvankas because they were in military uniforms. "But now I ask you all to remember those Ukrainians who are literally our strength and our defence. "Ukraine is diverse, and this is our strength, and it was evident throughout the day in the different patterns of embroidery. "It's important to remember the richness that unites us all," he added. He also noted that today was Ukraine's international holiday - Vyshyvanka Day - and said many wore vyshyvankas - a traditional embroidered shirt. "I am confident that we will accomplish this task," he added. Mr Zelenskyyy also said he had held a meeting with international staff and the their task was to maintain the momentum for international support. He said: "Our priorities for this week, next week, and for the near future are additional air defence systems, additional missiles, training and aircraft, and long-range weapons. The Ukrainian leader said offensive brigades were "doing a good job" and so were the air force. Additional air defence systems are a priority for Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said in his nightly address.
